Pure + Simple: A Holistic Guide to Natural Beauty by Kristen Ma

With the ever growing new innovative and tech-savvy beauty products plunging into the cosmetics market every year, consumers are being fed the concept of the need to keep everything up to date with the current trend. Kristen Ma, a Toronto based beauty entrepreneur and veteran esthetician, co-owner of Pure + Simple Inc,  saw the effects of the fast pace and high demanding beauty trend is not naturally for everyone because the core essential fact that each person is unique, and thus each of their beauty needs are and must be specific.

In her published book “Pure + Simple: A holistic Guide to Natural Beauty”, Ma provided clear direction for the path to natural beauty. Chapters include Ayurveda based step to step guidance regarding defining the different body needs for each person, treatment methods in the natural path, and ways to develop long-term sustainable health focused beauty from inside and out. Each topic is written in a clear, simple and logical structure that it is straightforward to understand.

Inspired by Ayurveda, a 5000 year-old East Indian Science of Health and Medicine which teaches that healing, and therefore, beauty, stems from a balanced lifestyle supported by knowledge, Ma strives to help her clients to achieve not only beauty, but also their greater personal health and well-being.

Ma believes knowledge is power. She noted that her mother, Jean Eng, told her that people cannot take away what is in the mind, for knowledge and wisdom are a person’s most important investment. For Ma, everything on this earth can be a poison or a cure, depending on what and who are being treated. However, some of the ingredients used in popular cosmetics damage the skin, and worse, the body. Skin is not only what covers our body; it is also a vital organ that regulates our temperature, absorb moisture and what our skin touches, repel harmful substances and signal irritation to avoid further damages, and operates in many more essential functions. The problems arise on the skin are signals. Depending on the type of problem, one should understand the important underlying issue connected with the problem so a much more throughout treatment plan can be established for both the skin and the body.

The definition for natural skincare products has become clouded. Cosmetic marketers label products as “natural” when they contain as little as 2% natural ingredients. Unfortunately, consumers assume this labelling ensures complete natural content.

To ensure the safe, natural and high quality of services and products, Pure + Simple Inc also develops and carries their very own line of natural skincare products. Ma ensures her products are 100% natural and does not contain any harmful or harsh ingredients such as Parabens, Petrochemicals, Silicones, Phthalates, Sulfates, and synthetic fragrances and dyes.

Excerpts from Kirsten Ma’s “Pure + Simple: A Holistic Guide to Natural Beauty”:

“As we know, beauty is more than skin deep. True beauty is the reflection of a healthy mind and body. Nothing is more attractive than someone who radiates vitality.”

“Personal beauty is only fulfilling when we also encourage more beauty in our environment. To be gorgeous inside and out means being conscious of how we consume, and what ideas we promote. Our values on beauty greatly reflect who we are and what beliefs we support.”

“We must think of our skin as a gatekeeper to our internal organs. It is extremely delicate, so being gentle is very important. … over-washing decreases the skin’s resilience, immunity and general health. “

“Change must come from us first. Often we think society must do the changing while forgetting that collectively we ARE society. It is our individual responsibility to help change general beliefs, instead of allowing ourselves to be sabotaged by them.”
