3 essential tips to help you achieve your new year resolutions

Now that we have stepped into the new year, you may already have a number of new year resolutions that you like to fulfill. You have spent the time to put your thoughts into what you would like to accomplish this year, it is essential that you do reach your goals in the end. Here are three essential tips to help you follow through with your new year resolutions throughout the year.

Tip #1: Check last year’s list first

Having unfinished business and commitments is a constant reminder that you still have to save some of your resources or have to come back to what you started. It puts a bitter memory in your brain that prompts negative feelings towards new goals, and also it tricks the brain into thinking having a new year resolution is just a tradition and not something you have to get it done seriously. So before you go on with your new list for the new year, check your old list from last year and put a DEFINITE result to it: either mark it as something you will complete this year, or put a date onto that item of when you will look back onto it. The whole idea of having a new year resolution or a list of it is to help you achieve something you want, not to discourage you in negative ways.

Tip #2: Maybe you have too many items

The human brain can remember approximately 7 things give or take. Anywhere between 5 to 9 things is a comfortable list of number of items your brain can remember. It is a good idea to keep your list of new year resolutions no longer than 9 items. That way, you do not feel as pressured into achieving a long list of things you might not have the time or effort for. Another benefit is to allow yourself enjoy the process of completing the list. If it is short, it is easier to accomplish and any accomplishment is a great positive feeling that can inspire you and encourage you to continue onto accomplishing more resolutions.

Tip #3: Have a partner to accomplish your new year resolutions with

Peer encouragement is a huge factor. The idea that you are in a team and trying to help each other reach the same goal has a tremendous positive push for your desires to succeed.

In a study of 117 adults, those who worked out with friends (or a spouse or co-worker) said they enjoyed the exercise more than those who got sweaty solo, say researchers from the University of Southern California. Makes sense: you like hanging out with your friends, you (mostly) like exercising—combine the two and you double your fun.

This can also be a great way to spend time with your friends, family members and even your partner. Having a shared accomplishment will be a positive shared memory.

Or one of the most obvious reason: some new year resolutions you can just cannot do alone. Learn a new dance, go hiking, build a car from scratch… you name it, there are things out there you are better to with a partner.

With these 3 easy tips now yours, I wish everyone a wonderful happy new year and success in accomplishing all of your new year resolutions.
